How Do Onions Stay Fresh Longer?

There are some methods and tips you should know about storing onions – and thereby keeping them fresher for longer. Ideally choose a cool, dark, and dry place. The basement is therefore perfect for storing the onions. A pantry in the apartment is also fine – the tubers will keep there for up to six weeks. The ideal temperature for storing onions is between four and ten degrees. Nevertheless, you should not store classic onions in the refrigerator. The reason: They quickly lose their taste and do not get enough air. That’s why you shouldn’t pack the vegetables in a plastic bag. Instead, place it in a net or basket.

Storing onions: tips and other tricks

With optimal conditions and storage in the cellar, onions can keep fresh for six months. However, if you would like to keep half an onion, proceed as follows: Place it cut side down in an airtight container. If you don’t have one, sprinkle the cut side of the onion with salt or butter to keep it from drying out. Prepared in this way, half onions can also be stored in the refrigerator. Alternatively, you can store cut onions: It is best to freeze a large quantity of them right away. That way, you only have to bother with slicing (and crying) once, but then have the flavorful vegetables ready to cook.

By the way: Spring onions and red onions keep better in the fridge than in the basement, but they don’t like plastic bags either. Our recipes for balsamic onions or for our unusual, refined onion and leek cake prove how aromatic the bulbs taste!
