Can You Freeze Pears?

Spread the love

Can you freeze pears? Does the fruit have to be raw or already cooked? What is better, freezing pears without sugar – or with? Maybe you know this too: The delicious golden-yellow fruit raises many questions in connection with the freezer. In principle, you can freeze pears, but this only works under certain conditions. Especially if you want to process the fruit afterward. Because the flesh of the pear is no longer crisp if you thaw it again a maximum of ten months later. It becomes mushy due to the sub-zero temperatures when freezing. This is why pears are no longer suitable for cakes or fruit salads after they have been frozen. Freezing pears for baby food or pear sauce, on the other hand, is practical. As an alternative to freezing, you can also make pear compote or pear sauce from the fruit after a rich harvest.

PS: apples and pears, bananas and oranges, kiwis and apricots. A colorful fruit basket looks appetizing, no question. But which types of fruit belong in the fridge? We have summarized the answers for you.

Tips and How-To: Dos and Don’ts When Freezing Pears

First things first: never freeze the whole pear. Because that gives a rather unappetizing mess when defrosting. Instead, when freezing, do the following:

1. Freeze only ripe pears. However, they should not be too soft. If they are soft on top but the body is still firm, the fruit has the right consistency.

2. Wash the fruit, remove the shell and cut into bite-sized pieces.

3. To prevent the pear from turning brown, squeeze a little lemon juice over the pieces and mix with a little sugar. If you want to freeze pears without sugar, that also works, but then the pieces do not look quite as pretty when they are thawed.

4. Make portion sizes from the pear that make sense for later processing. Then place the pieces in airtight containers or in freezer bags, and squeeze out the air as best you can before sealing. Trapped air negatively affects the taste and appearance of the pears.

If you later want to use the frozen pears to make mush or compote, it is best to put the fruit in the pot while it is still frozen. You can also freeze cooked pears or pear sauce. You don’t need to prepare either of these things in particular, you can simply place them on ice in a suitable container.
