How to eat prickly pears: Here’s how

A prickly pear tastes sweet and sour and contains a lot of vitamin A. Before you can eat the healthy fruit, you have to open it first:

  • The easiest way to eat it is to divide the prickly pear in half. To do this, take a sharp knife and cut the fruit in half.
  • You can then simply scoop out both halves with a spoon and eat them straight away. The taste may remind you of a pear. Incidentally, the seeds of the prickly pear may be eaten.
  • If you want to process the prickly pear, you should peel it. To do this, cut off the peel from top to bottom with a knife.
  • If the shell still has spines, you should remove them first. Be sure to wear sturdy gloves to avoid injury. In the case of fruit from the supermarket, however, the spikes have usually already been removed.
  • Tip: The fruit tastes particularly good in a fruit salad – together with kiwis, apples, and pears.
