How Many Steps A Day Contribute To Health?

Everyone should walk 10,000 steps a day: This goal is mentioned again and again when it comes to the topics of exercise, weight loss, and health in general. Read where this number actually comes from and whether the level of activity is sufficient for training.

The 10,000-step rule – a myth?

Most people want to stay fit for a long time. Exercise and diet should help. But while many like to cook healthy, there is a lack of motivation for physical activity. 10,000 steps per day are often mentioned as a simple goal. The fact that you can help prevent cardiovascular diseases and other lifestyle diseases with this level of exercise is not based on scientific knowledge. The recommendation was first made by a Japanese company that launched a pedometer during the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, which arbitrarily propagated the value as a goal. From there, the fitness rule spread around the globe and was even picked up by the World Health Organization (WHO). In the meantime, some researchers have found fewer steps in studies than are sufficient to improve health, while others say it should be significantly more. Whatever the case, one thing is certain: Since we sit an average of 7.5 hours a day in our modern everyday life in Germany, every step is better than no movement at all.

Steps are good, exercise is better

The shortcoming of the steps rule is the intensity. If you slowly put one foot in front of the other ten thousand times, you train your cardiovascular system to a much lesser extent than, for example, with half an hour of Nordic walking or jogging. Also, comparatively few calories are burned, which is important for many people who want to lose weight. If you want to replace exercise with walking, you will quickly reach your limits – this is especially true for younger, healthy people and children. Seniors benefit more from walking to increase their fitness. The 10,000-step goal can also help anyone who simply doesn’t have the time to exercise to incorporate more exercise into their stressful everyday life. Along with beauty rituals, walking will help you relax unless you’re struggling to hit that exact number of steps each day. Just walk whenever you can, whether it’s on your lunch break, in the office building, on the way to work, or to go shopping.

How do count how many steps you take each day?

A pedometer integrated into fitness trackers and apps for smartphones actually helps to estimate how many steps you actually take per day. But you can also easily convert known distances into steps. Depending on your height, 6 to 7 kilometers correspond to 10,000 steps. Is that too much for you as a daily goal? Then there are always other forms of movement. Start the day with power muesli and then cycle to work. Or do a few strengthening exercises with your own body weight in front of the TV in the evening. There are many ways to lead a more active life.
