How to Clean a Coffee Maker with Bleach

Why use bleach?

While bleach can seem pretty scary to some people, it really isn’t that dangerous if you know how to use it properly. People often confuse bleach with other cleaning products when it is actually a disinfectant.

Chlorine bleach is safe to use to disinfect household appliances and surfaces. Bleach kills harmful bacteria and disinfects laundry. However, it’s important not to use too much bleach or your clothes will end up looking lighter than they were when you put them in.

To disinfect and clean a surface/device you must first wash it with soap to remove dirt and grime, let it dry and once dry treat it with a little diluted bleach. The diluted solution should be about 1 cup of bleach per liter of water, since bleach is incredibly acidic.

When using bleach, keep your area ventilated as much as possible by opening windows and turning on fans. You should also wear gloves to avoid chemical burns.

As previously mentioned, you must first clean your coffee maker with some soap and water before using bleach. There is no need to run water through the hoses of your coffee maker. However, a quick wipe of the most accessible parts will do the trick.

Mix together 1 cup of bleach and 3 to 4 cups of water. Then take some filter paper and put it in the coffee maker.

Pour the bleach and water mixture into the coffee maker and keep adding water. Turn on the device and unplug it after a few minutes.

To avoid bleach residue, rinse the coffee maker several times with regular water. You don’t want cleaning chemicals in your morning cup of coffee.
