How to clean a deep fryer

Remove fat and roughly clean a deep fryer

  • Disconnect the fryer from the mains (pull the plug).
  • Pour out the cooled fat and wipe out the fryer roughly with kitchen paper. Pay particular attention to the areas under the edge.
  • You can then simply throw the used kitchen paper in the trash can. It is best to wear kitchen gloves when cleaning.

Loosen greasy dirt inside

  • Fill the fryer with as much water as you normally use oil (up to the maximum line). Add some washing-up liquid and let the washing-up liquid soak in.
  • If it is very dirty, you can also use hot water (grease dissolves better in it). While it is taking effect, you can lightly work the walls of the fryer with the dishwashing brush so that the greasy dirt can be removed more easily. Then dump the water out.

Rinse the deep fryer

  • Mix vinegar essence with water in a ratio of 1:3 and rinse the inside of the fryer thoroughly. For corners and hard-to-reach places, use the dishwashing brush again. After rinsing with the vinegar mixture, rinse again thoroughly with clean water.

Clean basket and lid

  • Soak the fryer basket in hot water with a little washing-up liquid added. You can soak the basket for up to half an hour to thoroughly loosen the greasy dirt. It is best to use detergent with high fat-dissolving power. Use the dishwashing brush to better loosen the grease residue.
  • Alternatively, you can put the fryer basket in the dishwasher. But make sure that the manufacturer of the deep fryer also allows this. Not all baskets are dishwasher safe.
  • Do the same with the lid. However, if you have installed an odor filter in the lid, you should be careful not to immerse this filter in water and, if possible, not to get it wet. Otherwise it won’t work properly afterwards. If you can remove the filter, remove it before placing the lid in the water. Do not put it back in until the lid is completely dry.

Clean the outside of the deep fryer properly

  • There is also usually a very sticky film of fat on the outside of the fryer. The sticky grease is usually difficult to remove from the smooth plastic with conventional means and takes a lot of time.
  • Here you can best use tried and tested home remedies: vinegar essence, soda or baking powder. All three, mixed with water, remove sticky layers of fat particularly well. Another option is dishwasher tabs that you dissolve in water. Simply dip a soft cloth or the soft dish brush into the mixture and let it work a little on the outside of the fryer. Then wipe with a damp cloth. If necessary, repeat until the greasy film has been completely removed.

Important tips to keep in mind when cleaning

Under no circumstances should you:

  • aggressive cleaning agents
  • scouring pads
  • steel wool

This applies both to the inside of the fryer and to the housing. These agents can damage the delicate surfaces.

Heating elements and live parts must never be immersed in water. Also, the fryer must never be rinsed under water. Short circuits and electric shocks could result.

After cleaning, the deep fryer must be thoroughly dried before being used again.

When purchasing, the following applies: the more you can disassemble a fryer, the easier it is to clean later. Pay attention to this point if you have to decide between several models.
