Life hacks from a nutritionist

  • Don’t buy sweets and cookies at home. If there’s nothing in the fridge, it’s not a given that you won’t go to the nearest store, but there are still fewer temptations. Eat sweets in a restaurant or when you’re visiting, but they shouldn’t be at home.
  • Do not remove sugar from your diet right away, because you have lived with this habit for many years. You need to leave an acceptable rate. For starters, give up sugary drinks or eat desserts once a day and only one thing. Important: eat not one cake, but one piece! If you eat a varied diet, it will be easier to give up sugar.
  • Substitution is our everything. Swap out store-bought muesli with excess sugar for homemade granola. Or yogurt with additives for white yogurt with fruit that you cut yourself. For tea, take a green apple cut into thin slices, not a pack of cookies. It will be difficult at first, but you will quickly get used to it.
  • Train yourself to study the composition of food. You may not fully know how much sugar you actually eat. It’s in bread, savory sauces, and muesli. If you just start paying attention to your daily menu, it will be easier to give up some dishes.
  • Don’t forbid yourself, sweets! Feelings of guilt make us limit ourselves completely, then we have a breakdown, then we limit ourselves again, and so on ad infinitum. It’s better to have one candy every day than a bar once a week.
  • Start making desserts yourself. Learn and try new things with your family or friends. Make cheesecakes or a pie to see how much sugar is actually in the dish.
  • The most difficult rule is to learn not to get stuck in emotions. Start keeping a diary to understand when and why you eat sweets and track when one candy turns into a box: whether you are sad or bored, angry or happy. And learn to get emotions in other more useful ways.
