Is Extra Sugar Added to Milk?

Spread the love

On my milk pack (“Fresh Whole Milk”) I found an indication of sugar under the carbohydrate information. Has sugar been added to the milk now?

No, no sugar is added to the milk. Nevertheless, the information in the nutritional value table is correct, because milk  naturally contains  milk sugar (lactose). Milk contains about 4.8 g of lactose per 100 ml.

The sugar content given in the nutritional value table represents the sum of all single and double sugars present, regardless of whether they are naturally contained in the food or whether they are added.

If sugar is added to a food, this must be stated in the list of ingredients. There you will find all the ingredients used in descending order of their weight percentage. When it comes to sugar, it should be noted that it can also be hidden behind terms such as glucose syrup, fructose, dextrose, etc.
