Karambola – The Star Fruit

Spread the love

The carambola (also called star fruit) is a visual and culinary delight due to its penetrating greenish-yellow colour, its unusual shape, its delicate scent, and its sour aroma. If you cut the 5-ribbed fruit crosswise, you get decorative star-shaped slices. The flesh has few seeds, is juicy and crisp.

Origin

Malaysia, Thailand, Israel.

Taste

The taste is refreshingly sour to sweet.

Use

Because of its decorative star shape, the carambola is usually sliced and used as a garnish. It gives fruit salads, desserts, and sauces a fresh, exotic touch. Carambola has only a few edible seeds. It is therefore well suited for processing into jams and jellies. The skin of the carambola can also be eaten.

Storage

The carambola is sensitive to cold, so it should not be stored below 5°C. The star fruit will keep for about five days at room temperature and up to three weeks in the refrigerator.
