Make Oat Milk Yourself: Recipe And Tips For Vegan Milk Substitutes

Oat milk from the supermarket is usually packed in tetra packs and is therefore responsible for a lot of waste. In addition, store-bought oat milk also contains unnecessary additives. A good alternative: make your own oat milk. It’s very simple – and also inexpensive and environmentally friendly.

Oat milk is a popular alternative to cow’s milk because it’s packed with healthy nutrients and is high in fiber. If you make the vegan plant-based milk yourself, it is significantly cheaper than the ready-made oat milk from the supermarket or drugstore. In addition, there is almost no packaging waste. And another advantage of homemade oat milk: the milk alternative from your own kitchen is free of sugar and unnecessary additives.

Important to know: You should be careful when choosing oatmeal. Some of the cereal flakes contain nickel, mold and mineral oil. We tested 24 oats – here are the test results.

Ingredients for homemade oat milk

The following ingredients are enough for one liter of homemade oat milk:

  • 1 liter of water
  • 100 grams of oatmeal
  • 1 pinch of salt

Dates, sugar or maple syrup to sweeten as you like
You will also need a saucepan, a blender and a fine sieve.

Recipe: Make your own oat milk

In a saucepan, add water, oatmeal, and a pinch of salt. Bring the mixture to a boil, then simmer gently for about 20 minutes.
Puree the oat drink with the stand or hand blender at the highest level.
Pour the finished mixture through a fine-mesh sieve. Squeezing the pulp left in the strainer with a spoon will drain even more liquid.

Tips: Homemade oat milk

If the oat drink is not sweet enough for you, you can add dates, sugar or maple syrup to the blender.

Homemade oat milk sometimes gets a slightly slimy consistency. What helps? Simply strain the drink through a clean tea towel.

If you make your own oat milk, it will keep in the fridge for two to three days. The fresher the milk, the better it is. Before use, you should shake it up briefly.

Oat milk is free of lactose, milk protein and any soy components. This makes the vegan oat drink suitable for people who suffer from intolerance or allergies. You can use them in any recipe that calls for cow’s milk.

You can use the gruel that remains in the sieve for your muesli, for cereal patties or for baking bread.

Did you know that you can also make your own soy milk? We have a suitable recipe ready for you.

By the way: The packaging of oat milk often only says “oat” or “oat drink” and never “oat milk”. This is because manufacturers are no longer allowed to write “-milk” in product names for purely plant-based products. We continue to speak of oat milk because that corresponds to normal usage.
