Make spruce needle oil yourself: This is how it works

You can also buy spruce needle oil in stores. However, if you want to be sure that the oil contains only natural ingredients and that the spruce needles are fresh, you can make the oil yourself.

• The production of essential oils usually works particularly well with a so-called still. This ensures that water evaporates, is passed through the plant material and then condenses again. The condensate finally consists of a by-product and and the essential oil.
• The first step is to chop up some fresh spruce needles into small pieces. It is important not to crush them so much that they no longer have any structure and are just a kind of mush.
• Now put the pieces of needle on the sieve of the still. Then fill the designated container underneath with water. Make sure that the sieve and the needles do not get wet.
• In order for the steam to be able to release the scent molecules from the needles, the water must first boil. The water is then cooled down again in the still so that it condenses in the second tank.
• The end product in the second container now consists of the hydrosol and the spruce needle oil, which settles on the water surface because it is not water-soluble. With the help of a pipette or syringe you can now carefully draw off the oil and put it in an open glass container.
• Only close the jar after a few days of unfolding. If you have sealed it airtight, the oil should best be stored in a cool place.

Make spruce needle oil with the espresso pot

Another tool to make a smaller amount of spruce needle oil can be the espresso pot. To do this, proceed as follows:

• With this method, only a very small amount of oil is produced in comparison. If you only have a few spruce needles available, this variant could be ideal for you.
• As a first step, fill the espresso pot container with some water. Now fill the finely chopped spruce needles into the sieve, which is actually intended for espresso powder.
• Now heat the pot on a stovetop. Place a container in front of the jug to catch the oil and hydrosol. Then proceed in the same way as for the other methods.

Make your own spruce needle oil in a pot

The fact that water has to first evaporate and then condense again to produce the oil is a basic requirement. If you don’t have a still at home, this can also be done using a pot and a lid.

• You can also recreate a still yourself using a sieve, a pot with a lid and a bowl. First fill the pot with some water and then place the sieve on top.
• Now put the spruce needles in the sieve. Make sure that the sieve does not come into contact with the water. Now put the lid on the pot the wrong way round . The handle should be above the separate bowl.
• Now heat the water. Now the same process as with the still should take place. In the separate bowl, the spruce needle oil should settle on the hydrosol again , which you can remove. Then proceed in the same way as the other method.

With this you can combine the spruce needle oil

If you do not want to produce pure spruce needle oil, you can alternatively put other parts of the plant in the sieve. You can regulate the intensity individually through the amount of plant parts. Spruce needles can be combined particularly well with, for example:
