Is Oat Milk Healthier than Cow’s Milk?

Spread the love

In terms of calories, an oat drink is comparable to low-fat cow’s milk.

Cow’s milk is “inherently” a protein-rich food with calcium and vitamins. An oat drink naturally contains less protein and, above all, less calcium.

Oats themselves contain plenty of fiber, minerals and vitamins. However, an oat drink consists largely of water. On average, 10-15% oats are used. This is usually fermented, whereby the starch contained is broken down into sugar. Therefore, an oat drink often tastes quite sweet, even without external sugar being added. The addition of some vegetable oil gives it its typical white color.

Other nutritional values are contained to a lesser extent than in pure oats. Some manufacturers therefore add additional vitamins and minerals. Calcium in particular is often used, since an oat drink can then be used as a “milk substitute”.

Some manufacturers also add sugar, flavorings or other additives to the oat drinks. It is therefore worth taking a look at the list of ingredients and comparing the drinks on offer. This is the only way to avoid unwanted substances.

For people who cannot tolerate lactose or milk protein, an oat drink is a good substitute for cow’s milk, which can be used in a variety of ways (cooking, baking, in coffee or drunk straight).

Incidentally, the term oat “milk” is not legally permitted. The word “milk” is reserved for products derived from animals. Therefore, the term “drink” is usually found on the packaging of the suppliers.
