An onion sauce is easy to make and goes well with a variety of dishes – such as spaetzle with schnitzel, meatballs, or sausages with mustard. To prepare the tasty sauce you need the following ingredients:

  • 4 onions (you can also add shallots for a milder taste)
  • 3 tablespoons flour
  • 3 tablespoons of butter
  • 100 milliliters of grape juice
  • 400 milliliters of vegetable broth
  • A dash of whipped cream
  • Salt and pepper and fresh herbs of your choice (e.g. parsley)

Here’s how to prepare the onion sauce

Proceed step by step to prepare the onion sauce:

  1. Peel the onions (or the shallots) and then cut them into small cubes.
  2. Put the butter in a saucepan. Once liquid, sauté the onions in it until translucent.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and continue to sauté the mixture.
  4. Then add both the grape juice and the vegetable stock, stirring constantly.
  5. Let the sauce simmer for a few minutes over low heat.
  6. Add a dash (about 100 milliliters) of cream to the sauce. Now she has to simmer again for a few minutes.
  7. Finally, season the onion sauce with salt and pepper. Also, sprinkle parsley or other herbs over the sauce.
