Peel Sunflower Seeds – That’s How It Works

Crack and peel the sunflower seeds

With this first method, you only need a firm, flat object to open the sunflower seeds.

  • Take a single sunflower seed. Hold it slightly at an angle and with the seam facing up.
  • Hit the seam of the sunflower seed with a solid object, such as a meat mallet. This opens a small gap at the core.
  • Now you can break open the shell further with your fingernails and carefully peel it off until you have exposed the core.

Open the sunflower seeds using a blender

Using a hand mixer, peel several sunflower seeds at once.

  • Put the seeds in a tall bowl and “mix” them with the mixer. Turn it on three to four times for two to three seconds each time.
  • Then put the seeds in a bowl and fill it with cold water.
  • Stir the kernels vigorously with a wooden spoon or similar to loosen the shell from the kernels.
  • While the shells float to the top, the pips sink to the bottom of the bowl. Use the spoon to remove the shells.
  • Dry the exposed seeds in a colander.
