Pesticides in Plants and Pesticide Residues in Fruits

Are there any findings or legal regulations on pesticide residues in berry bushes, strawberry, tomato and pepper plants from DIY and garden centers? Are there any pesticides in the harvested fruit?

It is not just fruit and vegetables that are sold in stores that are subject to legal regulations and random checks, but also the plants themselves.

The use of pesticides in agriculture and horticulture is extensively regulated. The Plant Protection Act applies in Germany. There are stricter requirements in organic farming.

Maximum residue levels are regulated uniformly throughout the EU. This means that the exact application and cultivation, for example tomatoes or strawberries, in the greenhouse or in the open air, as well as a maximum content, are specified for each approved active substance. Chemical-synthetic pesticides are prohibited in organic farming.

In Germany, the federal states are responsible for monitoring pesticide residues, whereby a distinction must be made between plants and food.

The plants are controlled by the plant protection services of the individual federal states. They randomly check plants in nurseries and farms for the use and dosage of pesticides, among other things. The controls take place according to a defined control plan, but also on an ad hoc basis.
