Pitting Olives Made Easy: The Best Tricks

Pit the olives with a special tool

If you cut up olives and try to get the pit out, you’re going to struggle.

  • It’s much easier with an olive stoner.
  • Here you have to insert the olives one by one, the tongs push out the pit – similar to a device for removing cherry pits.
  • With simple household appliances, however, it works just as well – and even faster.

Push out the core quickly

In the kitchen, you will find everything you need to pit olives quickly and effortlessly.

  • A knife with a relatively long blade is enough to cleanly remove the pits from the olives. However, they do not cut, but the press.
  • Place the flat side of the knife on the olive and press the blade lightly. Pull the knife toward you so the fruit rolls under the knife. The core is pushed out.
  • The core doesn’t always come out all by itself. Then just pull out the rest with your fingers.
  • The procedure is simple, but there is one thing to keep in mind: Do not press too hard, a gentle pressure is sufficient. Go too vigorously, mash the pit and olive.

Pit the olives with a rolling pin

Gentle pressure lets the pit slide out of the olive, as explained in the knife method.

  • If you want to make it even easier for yourself, do not remove the pits from the olives one by one. This is useful, for example, if you want to pickle olives – you prepare a lot of fruit for this.
  • Using a rolling pin, pit many olives at a time.
  • The trick works similar to the knife trick: place the fruit on a flat surface and slowly roll over it with a little pressure with the rolling pin.
  • You will notice that the seeds will slide out of the fruit all by themselves.
