Preserve onions: Here’s how
If you have too many onions at home, you can extend their shelf life using a number of methods:
- Onion paste : To make a stable paste from the onions, you need to chop 100 grams of peeled onions and puree them with 15 milliliters of vegetable oil and 15 grams of salt. Then pour the paste into a glass and use it for different dishes.
- Pickling onions in vinegar water : Put 200 grams of finely chopped onions in a mixture of 200 milliliters of water and vinegar. Let everything boil for 4 minutes and then put the onions in a mason jar. Fill this with the liquid and then put the glass in the fridge.
- Putting onions in oil : First cut 200 grams of onions into small pieces. After that, prepare 50 milliliters of oil by refining it with spices such as basil and parsley. Then put the onions in the oil and let them steep for a few hours. Store the pickled onions in the refrigerator afterwards.
Freezing onions: This is how it works
If you have a large supply of onions, it is worth freezing them. For this you have to follow the following steps:
- To freeze onions, you must first cut them into small pieces. That way they will thaw faster.
- You can then either fill the onion pieces in an ice cube tray or put them in a freezer.
- You only have to place the container in the freezer afterwards.
- The onions will keep like this for about a year. To help remember when you froze them, you can write the date on the container.
How to defuse onions
Since raw onions usually have a very sharp taste, you can defuse them using various methods:
- Soak the onion in milk for about 30 minutes and then rinse with water.
- Alternatively, you can soak the onion in cold water. This also makes the taste milder.
- For the third method, you need to peel the onion and cut it into pieces. Then put them in a sealable container and put them in the fridge for a few hours.
- If you freeze the onions in small pieces beforehand, they also get a milder taste.
