Carrots taste great as a healthy snack between meals, cooked as a vegetable side dish and are even a great vegan alternative to salmon. But what is the best way to store carrots so that they stay crisp for a long time?

The great thing about carrots is that they fit perfectly into a regional and seasonal diet. Because carrots are available from us all year round from local cultivation – either fresh or from stock. You can cook the vegetables, but you can also snip them raw into the salad or dip them in a tasty dip.

Important when eating carrots: Our body needs a fatty component to the carrots so that it can convert the carotene contained in the carrots into vitamin A. You can fry the orange vegetables in oil, add them to a salad, or put them in an oil or vegetable bowl. Dip fatty dip.

Store carrots correctly: in the fridge or not?

But before eating comes shopping. We recommend regional organic carrots. You can even eat them with the skin on after washing them thoroughly. You can often buy carrots in bunches with carrot greens or in sacks.

In either case, you may have bought more carrots than you can use immediately. Therefore, you should store the vegetables in such a way that they stay fresh for as long as possible.

With carrots (and also radishes and beetroot) you should remove the green quickly after purchase. Otherwise, the herb will draw the water out of the root – i.e. the actual vegetable – and dry out the carrots.

To save on plastic, you can always buy carrots loose. If the turnips come in plastic packaging, you should remove this after purchasing. Carrots go bad faster in the plastic wrap.
Carrots then belong in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator. Wrapped in a damp cloth, they stay crisp for a few days.

Always keep carrots cool

Freeze carrots?

If you have a lot of carrots left, you can make a soup and then freeze them. The carrots also taste particularly good in a colorful vegetable soup.

But carrots can also be frozen on their own. It is best to cut off the ends, peel the carrots if necessary and chop them into small pieces. Frozen in this way, you can use the vegetables later and save yourself work.

You can freeze the carrots raw or blanch them in water for about two minutes. Blanched frozen carrots will last even longer. It is best to gently thaw frozen carrots overnight in the refrigerator.

If you don’t use up the carrots quickly enough or freeze them, that’s no reason to throw them away. Because if carrots have become squishy, ​​you can freshen them up with a simple trick: place the carrots in a glass of water so that they are completely covered. After a few hours you can take them out and the carrots will be crunchy again.
