Tofu – that’s what the meat substitute is all about
Tofu has been used as a food for thousands of years, but the meat substitute only became well known in Asia in the 8th century. Buddhist monks, who were among the first to become conscious vegetarians, produced tofu as a meat substitute.
- Tofu is made from soybeans. The soybeans are soaked and then pureed. Then the liquid part of the soy puree is separated from the solid, fibrous part.
- After the liquid part of the puree has been separated, it is further processed into soy drinks. The solid part is pressed into blocks as tofu.
- Tofu is gluten-free and tasteless, so you can use it in many ways. Smoked tofu, for example, tastes very tasty and you can also eat it cold.
- Tofu is particularly popular with vegetarians and vegans because of its high protein and iron content. Furthermore, tofu is characterized by a large proportion of isoflavones, which have a positive effect on the hormone balance.
- You can keep tofu in the refrigerator for about five days if you place the meat substitute in a plastic storage box and cover it with water before sealing the box.
