What Make Tomatoes So Healthy?

Tomatoes have many healthy ingredients. They primarily provide vitamin C, folate (folic acid), and the secondary plant substance lycopene. Tomatoes also contain fiber and, with 17 kilocalories per 100 grams, are considered a particularly low-calorie food.

Vitamin C has an antioxidant effect, which means it protects cells from damage caused by free radicals. It also contributes to the normal functioning of the immune system and to the normal functioning of bones and skin. It is also important for normal energy metabolism and the normal functioning of the nervous system. Finally, the heat-sensitive vitamin improves the absorption of iron, phosphorus, and calcium. 100 grams of fresh tomatoes provide 20 milligrams of healthy vitamin C and thus one-fifth of the daily requirement.

The lycopene contained in tomatoes also has an antioxidant effect. The secondary plant substance gives the tomato its red color and is mainly found in the skin. The concentration is particularly high in very ripe fruits. Some studies have found evidence that lycopene prevents previously damaged cells from developing into cancer cells. However, it has not been scientifically proven that lycopene actually has a cancer-preventing effect. However, thanks to its antioxidant effect, it has been shown to reduce the risk of vasoconstriction and cardiovascular problems and is therefore considered healthy.

The folate (folic acid) contained in tomatoes is also responsible for the vegetables being considered very healthy. Folate belongs to the group of B vitamins and is involved in many metabolic processes. It contributes to normal blood formation and has a function in cell division and the formation of genetic material. The requirement is increased during pregnancy and an adequate supply of folate (folic acid) is particularly important, for example, so that the nervous system of the embryo develops normally.
