As an Australian study has shown, we eat less diverse today than we did 100 years ago. So it’s high time to put some variety on our plates. The best healthy alternatives from supermarkets, health food stores and organic shops at a glance!

Tomato, cucumber, sausage and bread – all ticked off and quickly back home. Too bad actually! Habit buying can make us overlook hidden treasures in the supermarket. But it is precisely these that provide many valuable ingredients for health. These ten foods should end up in your shopping cart more often in the future:

Buckwheat

The pseudo-grain is a perfect alternative to wheat. It’s high in fiber and regulates insulin levels, according to a Canadian study.

The researchers suspect that regular consumption of buckwheat can even prevent and improve diabetes.

Lupins

The local legumes are rich in vegetable protein and are therefore already being used for ice cream, coffee, yoghurt and milk alternatives. Research also shows that they lower cholesterol and reduce the risk of colon cancer.

Tip: Soak the lupine seeds before using. So they are better tolerated.

Watercress

According to a US study, one kilo of watercress covers all relevant nutrients that we need in a day. It was therefore voted the healthiest vegetable in the world by the journal Preventing Chronic Disease. Due to the mustard oils it contains, watercress is also considered to have a healing effect on respiratory diseases.

Tip: If you want to eat a lot of it, cook a soup with it.

Black Seed Oil

There are countless studies about the healthy oil and yet it is overshadowed by olive oil and Co. Black cumin oil has an antiallergic effect, lowers blood pressure and is even used in cancer therapy.

Tip: 1 teaspoon of black cumin oil before breakfast strengthens the immune system. Honey or juice improve the taste.

Jerusalem Artichoke

If you want to do something good for your intestinal flora, it is best to use the delicious tuber regularly. Because of its prebiotic properties, it is officially considered a “functional food”.

Dandelion

Dandelion tastes good in salads, as tea or juice (health food store). Dandelion is rich in bitter substances that curb appetite, promote digestion and boost detoxification via the liver.

Beetroot leaves
