Spaetzle Casserole

The perfect spaetzle casserole recipe with a picture and simple step-by-step instructions.

  • 250 g Spaetzle bought ready
  • 100 g Bacon cubes
  • 120 g Grated Emmental
  • 2 Onions
  • Salt
  • Pepper
  • Nutmeg
  • 200 ml Sweet cream
  • 1 tbsp Clarified butter
  1. Cook the spaetzle according to the instructions.
  1. In the meantime, peel the onions and cut or slice them into rings. Heat the clarified butter in a pan and add the onion rings. Fry for about 10 minutes until they are lightly brown, then add the bacon and fry for another 5 minutes.
  1. Butter a casserole dish and line it with spaetzle, spread the onions with the bacon over it and also spread half of the cheese on top. Cover another layer with spaetzle. Spread the rest of the cheese on top.
  1. In the meantime, preheat the oven to 180 degrees (convection).
  1. Season the cream with pepper and nutmeg and pour over the spaetzle.
  1. Bake in the oven for about 30 minutes, until the cheese has melted and is lightly brown.
