Drinks containing electrolytes are useful if not necessary after exercise, but also in summer. There are electrolyte drinks on the market. However, you can also easily make drinks containing minerals yourself. How, we describe to you in this article.
Electrolyte-rich drinks – why they are important
If you sweat profusely, you lose electrolytes. It doesn’t matter whether you sweat through exercise or the heat of summer.
- For example, you lose salts, which you can taste from your salty skin when you sweat and afterwards.
- Drinking is important in both cases to compensate for the water loss. When you sweat, your body also loses important electrolytes.
- Certain minerals in the body are called electrolytes . Examples of electrolytes include calcium, potassium, sodium and magnesium.
- In dissolved form, i.e. in a liquid such as blood, electrolytes are able to carry an electrical charge, i.e. conduct electricity.
- In the body, the electrolytes have the task of keeping the water balance stable and the acid-base balance balanced. Electrolytes also regulate nerve and muscle function.
- Depending on which electrolytes are missing, this can have different effects. For example, a lack of calcium leads to discomfort and, in the worst case, to cramps.
