Pan coating is coming off – these are the reasons
Especially with pans with a non-stick coating such as Teflon or ceramic, scratches and the coating will eventually come off with frequent use.
- The reason for this is usually improper use. Metal spatulas and cooking utensils in particular can cause scratches.
- But also excessively high-temperature settings when cooking and roasting can be the reason why the coating peels off over time.
- Even if Teflon and ceramics are not generally harmful to health as long as they are not improperly heated, it is of course not a nice thought to possibly eat the coating of the pan if particles should end up in the food.
- Because there is no way to restore the coating, once the damage has reached a certain level, you should consider getting a new pan.
How to extend the life of your coated cooking utensils
An important factor that determines the lifespan of cooking utensils is quality.
- Of course, it doesn’t have to be the most expensive pan with the latest high-tech coating, but you shouldn’t necessarily go for the cheapest product if you want to use your pan for a long time.
- Another point is the temperature. Temperatures above 280 degrees Celsius will cause the coating to come off. For high temperatures, you should therefore use uncoated pans made of stainless steel or cast iron.
- Especially with roasters, with which you can also cook food in the oven, you should not exceed a maximum temperature of 280, ideally 220 degrees Celsius, and do without the grill function so that the roaster does not overheat.
- Also, do not use metal cooking utensils as this will damage the coating. On the other hand, wooden kitchen utensils are ideal, as wood does not scratch the coating.
