There is no special diet for irritable bowel syndrome. The symptoms are varied and are different for each person affected.

  • Since IBS leads to constipation in most cases, fiber is important. In addition to wholemeal bread, oat flakes, and muesli, oat or wheat bran are also recommended as grain products. It is important to drink enough so that the fiber can swell properly.
  • Eat well-tolerated types of fruit such as apples or raspberries and provide your body with sufficient vitamins through your diet.
  • There should also be enough vegetables on the menu. Anything that tastes good and doesn’t flatten is allowed. Carrots and broccoli, for example, are suitable, while cabbage is not recommended for irritable bowel syndrome because of its flatulent properties.
  • A healthy diet always includes lots of fruit and vegetables – but not everyone can tolerate everything. So it may be that you have to find out for yourself individually what is good for you and what is not – unfortunately, that is the case with irritable bowel syndrome.

These foods and luxury foods are harmful

You should avoid certain foods if you suffer from irritable bowel syndrome

  • Alcohol and cigarettes are poison for irritable bowel.
  • Coffee in moderation usually does no harm. However, some sufferers do not tolerate caffeinated hot drinks at all. Here it is again: try it!
  • All white flour products, such as rolls or baguettes, are not recommended.
  • Since sugar promotes the growth of harmful germs in the intestine, sweets are harmful. Anyone suffering from diarrhea should also avoid sugar substitutes such as sorbitol or xylitol. These can have a laxative effect in large quantities.
  • Finished products and carbonated drinks are usually not well tolerated either. This also applies to fatty foods. Don’t forget that there is often a lot of fat hidden in cheese and sausage. You should also avoid hot spices.
  • In general, very hot or very cold foods are not recommended for people with irritable bowel syndrome.
  • You should also limit the consumption of legumes. These cause flatulence, which can lead to problems with irritable bowel syndrome.

IBS – Eating habits are also important

It’s not just about what you eat – it’s also about how you eat.

  • It is important that you stick to regular meal times. Don’t make the portions too big. Five regular small meals are better than three large menus.
  • Dinner in particular should not be too lavish. In the evening, digestion shifts down a gear.
  • Don’t gorge on meals, take your time eating. Good digestion starts with extensive chewing.
  • Drink enough. It should be one and a half liters of water or low-calorie, low-acid drinks such as tea a day.
