When can butter go moldy?

Many foods quickly become moldy if they are stored incorrectly or for too long. This is not the case with butter:

  • Butter consists largely of fat. This fat does not contain any substances on which mold can form. That’s why it’s very unlikely that butter just goes moldy.
  • However, butter can still spoil by going rancid. You can recognize this with an unpleasant odor and a dark color. In this case, you should stop eating the butter.
  • Also note: Of course, bread and butter can still become moldy, since mold can form on the bread.
