Germinating Oats: How to Grow The Sprouts Yourself

Germinate oats – this is what you need for this

You need these things:

  • If you want to harvest 300 ml of sprouts, you need 100 grams of oats. In contrast to the production of oat milk, it is important here that the grain is also capable of germination. This is the case with naked oats.
  • You also need a vessel in which the grain can germinate. A seed jar is best for this. In such a vessel, the lid consists of a sieve. Liquid can therefore be poured off easily, air can get into the glass.
  • Otherwise, you only need water to grow the grain sprouts.

Grow oat sprouts for a healthy diet – that’s how it works

Oat sprouts taste pleasantly nutty and refine many foods. The sprouts also contain many vitamins.

  1. Before you put the oats in the sprouting jar, you should take another look at them. You should sort out damaged or broken grain kernels.
  2. Then put the oats in the sprouting jar. It should not be more than two tablespoons, as the volume increases significantly during germination.
  3. Add plenty of cold water. First, the grain is cleaned. So swirl the glass thoroughly to loosen any dirt. Then shake off the rinse water.
  4. To do this, fill the container with cold water again, this time about three times as much as the oats.
  5. This first soak should last about five hours. If you soak for too long, the grain will become slightly mushy and then no longer germinate. During this time, cover the jar with a kitchen towel and place it in a warm place. Around 20 degrees is ideal.
  6. After this first soak, pour off the water and refill with fresh water. Swirl the container again and throw away this water as well.
  7. Now the oats need time and light to form sprouts. Place the germination jar in its holder. The opening should point downwards at an angle. Any water present can drain off in this way. The location should be bright but not in direct sun.
  8. Oats need about two days to germinate. During this time you have to rinse the grain two to three times a day – i.e. fill the glass with water, swirl it around and pour off the water again.
  9. After about two days you should be able to use the sprouts. Before using it, rinse it again with plenty of water.
