Faworki – Chrust – fried pastries

Sift flour onto a countertop and make a well in the center. Add sugar, cream, butter, eggs, a little salt, baking powder, and lemon juice. Mix everything together and knead into a smooth dough. If it’s too sticky, add a little more flour. The dough should be similar to pasta dough. Cover and let rest for 1 hour (you can also leave it uncovered, but it’s better to let it rest). Roll out thinly and use a knife or wheel to cut 3 cm wide and 10-15 cm long strips. Make a 4-6 cm long cut in the middle of each strip and pull one end through the hole. Heat some oil and fry the faworki/pastries on both sides until golden brown. Drain on a kitchen towel. While still warm, dust thickly with powdered sugar mixed with vanilla sugar. Yields about 40-60 pastries. There are several recipes for this pastry.
