Potatoes in red sauce Algerian style – Batata chtitha

Ingredients for 2 servings:

  • 400 g potatoes
  • 2 tbsp rapeseed oil
  • 2 large garlic cloves, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp spice mix (Chakalaka) alternatively chili powder
  • 1 tsp paprika powder
  • 320 ml water
  • ½ tsp, levelled pepper, freshly ground
  • 1 tsp, heaped tomato paste
  • ½ tsp salt

Instructions

Working time approx. 10 minutes; Cooking/baking time approx. 30 minutes; Total time approx. 40 minutes

simple Algerian food

Cut the potatoes into boiled potatoes. Heat the oil in a pan. Sauté the garlic, briefly sauté the paprika, and then deglaze with water. Add the tomato paste, chakalaka, pepper, and salt and bring to a boil. Cook the potatoes until soft and arrange on plates. Traditionally, this dish is served with bread. Tip: For bread, I recommend “Algerian Bread (Khobz el Dar)” from my recipes.
