Working time approx. 20 minutes; Cooking/baking time approx. 40 minutes; Total time approx. 1 hour
Dutch Appelbollen
Peel the apples and core them. Mix the butter, sugar, and cinnamon well with a fork. Divide the puff pastry into 4 equal pieces and roll out the mostly rectangular pieces into squares on a floured surface. Line a baking sheet with baking paper and preheat the oven to 170 degrees Celsius (convection oven) or 180 degrees Celsius (top and bottom heat). Press the butter mixture into the cored apples with a small spoon, ideally so that it piles up at the opening. Place the filled apples on the puff pastry and close the sheet over the apples. Lightly press the puff pastry down and place the apples on the baking sheet. Whisk the egg yolk with a little cold water and brush the apples with it, then place in the oven. Baking time is approximately 30-40 minutes, but check frequently. Place the finished “Appelbollen” warm on a plate and cover with powdered sugar. Serve with, for example, vanilla sauce or vanilla ice cream.
