A recipe from Grandma Gertrud

Boil the poppy seeds in half the milk, half the sugar, and the raisins, then let them swell for at least 10 minutes. While the seeds are soaking, blanch the almonds in hot water, peel them, finely chop them, and add them to the poppy seed mixture. Cut the bread into thick slices and place them in a second bowl. Mix the remaining milk with the remaining sugar and coat the bread slices with it. Layer the swollen poppy seed mixture, alternating with the bread slices, in a glass bowl and let it chill thoroughly for at least 2 hours. Only then serve. Serve with mulled wine or warm wine.
