Argan oil is one of the most expensive and exclusive oils currently available. Here it is primarily known for its use in cosmetic products – but elsewhere it is also used as edible oil. Argan oil comes from southwestern Morocco. The oil is made from the fruits of the argan tree.

The production of argan oil

The production of the oil from the argan fruit is complex and is done by local farmers. The fruit that falls from the tree in summer is picked up from the ground. Further processing is also done by hand: fruit residues are removed from the berries so that only the stone remains.

Further production is optionally carried out with roasted or non-roasted kernels. These contain the seed of the fruit, which is knocked out of the core with stones. With a special tin mill system, the seed flakes are ground, then water is added. The result is a mass that is then kneaded and stirred by hand to obtain the fragrant oil.

For Moroccan farmers, the extraction of argan oil in the traditional way is often the only basis of life. However, there has long been a mechanical extraction method that is faster and more efficient. However, it robs the farmers of their livelihood. The area where the argan trees grow in Morocco was therefore declared a World Heritage Site and Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1998.

Argan oil is known for its valuable ingredients. It consists of 80 percent unsaturated and 20 percent saturated fatty acids. It contains a lot of vitamin E, which is important for the human body and cell renewal because of its antioxidant effect. It also helps prevent cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Antioxidants can also protect against free radicals and slow down the aging process. Due to the phytosterols, it contains (1300 to 2000 mg per liter of oil), argan fruit oil also helps to keep cholesterol levels low.

Argan oil for hair

Argan oil has many uses. The product can be used for hair care, for example. It is said to help improve the elasticity of stressed hair, repair old damage and prevent new damage. Argan oil ensures that the hair does not lose its internal moisture. The scalp also benefits from treatment with the oil: it promotes blood circulation, prevents dandruff, and is also said to contribute to healthy hair growth. For this purpose, the argan oil is either used as a hair treatment or massaged into the hair.

Argan oil for the face
