The ball radish belongs to the summer radish varieties and, like its relatives, to the cruciferous family. It is the roundest of the radish varieties and, due to its shape, is ideal not only to be eaten raw but also to be enjoyed filled.
Origin
Radish is a very old type of vegetable that originally comes from the Near East. Long forgotten, the radish is now available again in many variations.
Season
Fresh summer radishes are sold from March, the season lasts until September. Leaves that are still healthy indicate fresh produce.
Taste
In contrast to other types of radish, ball radish has a mild taste and is reminiscent of radishes. Due to the mustard oils it contains, however, it also brings the typical flavor with it.
Use
The root vegetable can be eaten raw with bread or as a topping. With the ball radish, the shape makes it ideal to prepare it filled. Served as a vegetable side dish, the ball radish is a delicious accompaniment to meat and fish. Grated and dressed with a little oil and vinegar, a radish salad is quickly prepared.
Storage
Radish should be stored in a cool place. It is best to remove the leaves first. Green radishes will keep in the fridge for three to five days. You can extend this period by wrapping the radish in a damp kitchen towel for storage.
