Ingredients for 16 servings:
- 500 g flour
- 1 packet of yeast (dry yeast)
- 100 g sugar
- 1 packet of vanilla sugar
- ½ bottle of flavoring (lemon flavor)
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 eggs
- 2 tbsp rum
- 80 g butter (liquid)
- 125 ml milk (lukewarm)
- 16 tsp plum jam
- Powdered sugar, as desired or vanilla sauce
Instructions
Working time approx. 20 minutes; Rest time approx. 1 hour; Total time approx. 1 hour 20 minutes
Mix the flour with the yeast, sugar, vanilla sugar, and salt. Stir in the eggs, rum, and lemon flavoring, then the melted butter and lukewarm milk. Knead the dough thoroughly; it’s normal for it to remain very soft and stick slightly to your hands. Cover the dough ball and let it rise in a warm place for 60 minutes. Divide the ball into 16 equal pieces. Flatten each piece one at a time on the work surface, pulling it apart slightly if necessary. Place a teaspoon of plum jam in the center and enclose the plum jam in the dough (roughly like a flower, then gather the top tip together so that the plum jam is completely hidden). Place the resulting Buchteln on a baking sheet lined with baking paper (for a higher-calorie version, place it in a buttered baking dish) and bake at 160°C (320°F) on the middle rack for 45–60 minutes. Serve warm, dusted with powdered sugar or smothered with vanilla sauce.
