Can You Freeze Mashed Potatoes? You Have To Take That Into Account

If you whip the defrosted mashed potatoes again with some cream or fry them in vegetable oil in a pan, the result will be better. You can also stir it into soup or combine it with other vegetables.

Freeze mashed potatoes

In order to be able to freeze mashed potatoes without any problems, you should consider the following points when preparing them:

  1. If you prepared it with water or vegetable broth, it will become lumpy after defrosting. Mix well and add a little oil or cream cheese if needed.
  2. Refine mashed potatoes preferably with milk, cream, or butter instead of water or broth. As a result, it largely retains its taste and texture.
  3. To prevent your mashed potatoes from becoming too sweet after defrosting, you should preferably use potatoes that contain little starch. “Washy” potatoes are low in starch and well suited. “Mealy” potatoes are not suitable for puree due to the high starch content for freezing.

Tip: If you mash a few freshly cooked potatoes into the puree after defrosting, it will largely regain its original taste.
