Can You Freeze White Sausage? All Info

What would Oktoberfest be without a pint of beer and a hearty white sausage? In the meantime, the delicious sausage has conquered all of Germany and is eaten with pleasure from January to December. This is possible precisely because the white sausages can be frozen easily and without complications.

The Bavarian delicacy is actually considered a snack and is traditionally eaten at the Oktoberfest in Munich between 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. as a second breakfast. Preferably with mustard and a pretzel. The requirement that the white sausages should be eaten by noon came from the fact that the white sausages were not yet pre-cooked by the butcher and therefore had to be eaten more quickly. In the meantime, the delicious sausage has found its way everywhere and is also eaten with pleasure and often outside of Bavaria.

Freeze white sausage

Whether you have fresh white sausages from the butcher or buy them in the supermarket. Both variants can easily be frozen. Just note that they shouldn’t have been reheated beforehand. If the shelf life of your white sausage is coming to an end, you can easily divide it into portions in freezer bags, seal them airtight and freeze them. After about three months at the latest, you should have used up the white sausage or thrown it away, as the taste suffers from freezing. That’s how it works:

  1. Place the uncooked white sausages in portions in freezer bags or cans and seal them airtight.
  2. Note the date on the freezer bags or cans.
  3. The sausages from the supermarket that have already been vacuumed and packaged remain in the sealed packaging.
  4. Put them in the freezer and use them within the next three months or the taste will suffer.

Defrost white sausages

You can easily defrost the frozen white sausages as needed. You have 2 options for defrosting: in the refrigerator or in cold water.

Defrost white sausages in cold water

If time is running out again, you can simply put frozen white sausages in a bowl of cold water. After about 2 hours they are defrosted and you can warm them up and enjoy them.

Thaw white sausage in the fridge

If you have a little more time, you can also let the white sausages thaw in the fridge. This is a little gentler but takes longer. It is best to put them in small portions on a plate and let them thaw in the fridge overnight.

White sausage simply tastes good to almost everyone. The preparation couldn’t be easier either. You heat water in a large pot and put the sausages in when it’s no longer boiling. Otherwise, the sausages will burst open and look unsightly. They’re warm and done cooking when the skin looks like they’re about to burst.

How you eat them is up to you. Perhaps typical, like the Bavarian who closes the delicacy with his hands. Or something more elegant with a knife and fork. And if you happen to have too many white sausages left over, you can now easily freeze them.
