Can You Open a Can Without a Can Opener?

Spread the love

Yes, a can can basically be opened without a can opener. You will then need a sharp kitchen knife or a spoon. This allows aluminum can lids to be perforated or scraped open. If you don’t have a tool at hand, canned food can also be rubbed up on a hard surface – such as a stone.

It is important that it is carried out by adults and carefully.

Three ways to open cans without a can opener

Cans made of soft aluminum can be opened with three simple tricks even without the associated opener.

Possibility 1: Open the can with a knife

  • Place the can on a stable surface, for example on the worktop or kitchen table.
  • Take a sharp, sturdy kitchen knife and place the tip of the knife on the inside edge of the lid of the can (where you normally put the opener).
  • Hold the knife vertically and pat the hand holding the knife firmly. A small hole is created with impact force.
  • Repeat the process all the way around until the edge of the lid is perforated.
  • Gently push in the perforated lid.
  • If the can only contain liquid, then 2 holes on the lid are sufficient. A large one, from which the liquid flows out, and a small one, which allows the air to get into the can so that the liquid flows out quickly. It is important that the holes are not directly next to each other.

Attention: With this method, special care is required due to the handling of a pointed and sharp knife.

Possibility 2: Open the can with a spoon

  • Place the can on a stable surface, for example on your worktop or kitchen table.
  • Take a spoon and place the tip of the spoon on the inside rim of the can lid.
  • Now move the tip of the spoon back and forth with pressure until the aluminum becomes thinner – and finally, a hole appears.
  • Repeat the process all the way around until the edge of the lid is perforated.
  • Now carefully press in the perforated lid of the can.

Possibility 3: Open the can without tools

  • You need a hard, insensitive surface – for example, asphalt, paving stones, or a stone floor.
  • Turn the can upside down and rub the lid side over the hard surface.
  • Repeat the process until the protruding edge of the can has been sanded down.
  • Test carefully whether the lid can be opened.
  • If not: Repeat the process until the lid can be detached.
