However, it could be that these fabulous effects are particularly noticeable in those people who have not paid so much attention to their health, who could hardly open their eyes without coffee in the morning and eat little fruit and vegetables overall, i.e. who other vegetable juice might have reacted with just as positive changes, e.g. B. on cucumber juice, fennel juice, cabbage juice or whatever.

Because if you have already started the day fresh and without coffee, you may not feel as much from the celery juice. In any case, you should try it yourself – especially if you have the feeling that you are a little less fit.

Celery juice has been known for thousands of years

Of course, celery juice was not reinvented. In TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine), which is thousands of years old, celery juice is used to treat high blood pressure, for example, and in Ayurveda, it treats digestive problems and neurological diseases of old age such as dementia and Parkinson’s.

As celery is an excellent source of potassium, one of its most important therapeutic effects is its diuretic effect, which is particularly beneficial for rheumatism and gout. Because now it is much easier to drain the uric acid and other waste products that cause the symptoms.

In addition, celery provides a lot of beta-carotene (2.9 mg per 100 g), which corresponds to well over 100 percent of the daily requirement. Since beta-carotene can be converted into vitamin A by the body as required, 100 g of celery already provides half of the daily vitamin A requirement, which can have an extremely beneficial effect on the eyes, mucous membranes, and bones.

However, the special interaction of all the plant substances contained in celery, including phenolic acids, flavonoids (e.g. apigenin), phytosterols, phthalides, and many more, is probably much more effective than individual vitamins and minerals. These substances are best known for their great antioxidant potential, which means they can prevent oxidative damage caused by free radicals.

In this way – according to various studies – one could prevent inflammatory processes in the body, which in turn can have a positive effect on all inflammatory diseases, such as chronic digestive problems.

The phthalide it contains is said to have a relaxing effect on the blood vessels and thus lower blood pressure – together with the abundant potassium, of course, which also has a beneficial effect on the cardiovascular system. Apigenin, on the other hand, is known as an anticancer substance that could shrink tumors in animal studies.

How celery juice affects the stomach

The polysaccharides contained in celery should also protect the stomach in particular. Researchers at King Saud University in Saudi Arabia found out in 2010 that an extract from celery (in rodents) has an extremely positive effect on gastric mucosa and its ability to regenerate. Even gastric ulcers can be prevented with it since celery regulates the formation of gastric acid.
Scientists assume that celery suppresses the overproduction of gastric acid. At the same time, thanks to its numerous minerals, celery is considered a very alkaline vegetable, so one could assume that it quickly neutralizes excess stomach acid. Anthony William, on the other hand, has a very different theory on the subject.

The effects of celery juice according to Anthony William

So even though celery is an ancient food and has been scientifically studied for many years, the current celery juice hype came about thanks to author Anthony William, who describes himself as a Medical Medium and writes in his books about what he thinks of as a ghost (“Spirit”) dictate.

William now believes that celery juice works so well on the stomach because it increases stomach acid production, which is particularly beneficial for heartburn and reflux. This is actually nothing new because in naturopathy it has long been explained that sore throat and reflux do not always have to indicate excess gastric acid, but also a lack of gastric acid, as this causes very similar symptoms.

Basically, it doesn’t matter what the cause is (whether too much or too little stomach acid), as long as the drugs used have a correspondingly regulating effect, i.e. can solve both problems equally.

William explains that drinking fresh celery juice (470ml) in the morning rejuvenates and strengthens the digestive system so well that you have excellent digestive power all day long.

Only drink organic celery juice!

If you buy celery sticks or celery juice, make sure that they are organic. Because celery is often treated with pesticides. In fact, conventionally grown celery is one of the 12 fruits and vegetables most commonly found to contain pesticide residues in the United States.

Also in the EU, celery is often contaminated with pesticide residues. Checks showed that up to 69 different pesticides can be present in the vegetables – according to PAN Germany (the Hamburg Pesticide Action Network).

Since the organism first has to laboriously detoxify and eliminate pesticides, foods that are contaminated with them are not part of a healthy diet. Therefore, only buy your celery sticks or celery juice of organic quality!

Drink celery juice as per Anthony William’s instructions

If you want to drink celery juice according to Anthony William, then prepare the celery juice fresh every day and drink 470 ml of it at least once a day – on an empty stomach in the morning about 15 to 30 minutes before the first meal.

Celery consists of 90 percent water, so the yield is very high. Normally you get the desired 470 ml juice with approx. 600 g cleaned celery. However, since celery is very fibrous, you need a powerful juicer to produce the juice.

In any case, start with a smaller amount at first, as not everyone can tolerate so much of the unfamiliar juice on an empty stomach. Otherwise, digestive problems such as stomach pain, diarrhea, etc. could be the result, so one could lose the desire for celery juice far too quickly. Drink the juice slowly and in sips to test your tolerance.

According to William, the juice should not be mixed with other juices as it alters and may even reduce its effectiveness. If you can’t drink the juice pure, you should mix it with cucumber juice or possibly with some apple juice. But then you should gradually reduce the amount of juice mixed in until you get to pure celery juice.

If you don’t want to or can’t squeeze fresh celery juice every morning, then there is also high-quality organic celery juice in stores. It is gently pasteurized and only stabilized with a little lemon juice concentrate. The three-liter pack is sufficient for a two- to four-week cure, during which, according to the manufacturer, you drink 100 or 200 ml a day.
