Chlorophyll: Phytochemical With A Rich Green Color

Crisp green broccoli, tender boiled haricot beans, and herbs like parsley and cress: they all have one thing in common: chlorophyll. The plant substance gives the food its color. It is also of particular importance for our health.

Food in green: chlorophyll

They ensure the variety of colors in fruit and vegetables: secondary plant substances. Carotenoids, for example, make carrots appear orange, while flavonoids give cherries or berries a nice red color. Chlorophyll contributes the green color spectrum and enriches the diet with kale, rocket, leeks, green asparagus, and other foods. Due to the vitamins and minerals they contain, they make a valuable contribution to a balanced diet.

The role of chlorophyll in this has not yet been conclusively clarified. Science has so far found evidence, but no unequivocal evidence, that chlorophyll & Co. have a preventive effect with regard to diseases such as cancer and high blood pressure. Ingested in normal amounts with food, however, they do not harm either. For this reason, the German Society for Nutrition (DGE) recommends eating lots of fruit and vegetables and thus ensuring the supply of secondary plant substances.

Yes to foods with chlorophyll, no to pills

The situation is different with tablets, capsules, drops, and powder: According to the DGE, chlorophyll offered in this form as a dietary supplement is not recommended. Preparations with algae such as chlorella or spirulina can even be harmful, warns the consumer advice center. Because they could be contaminated with pollutants. As with any isolated, artificial nutrient supply, there is also the risk of overdosing. If you want to consume more chlorophyll in a targeted manner, you should simply reach for foods that are green. Enjoy fresh leafy greens more often, eat lettuce, cucumbers, herbs, and peas, choose a kiwi for a snack and try mixing up green smoothies.

Chlorophyll works against bad breath

Those who frequently consume foods with chlorophyll enjoy another advantage: the plant substance reduces bad breath and helps against the smell of garlic. Chlorophyll chewing gum also takes advantage of this fact. You can also simply chew a sprig of parsley after eating.

Conclusion: Be skeptical about health-related advertising statements such as “Chlorophyll promotes blood formation, prevents heart attacks and makes you slim” and refrain from taking products advertised in this way. Just eat a good portion of green foods. It’s cheaper – and tastier!
