Aronia juice – like rosehip powder – is often found in the list of superfoods that are supposed to enrich our kitchen and health. Among other things, aronia juice is said to help with weight loss and even protect against cancer. However, such claims are not scientifically proven and are usually prohibited, the consumer advice center warns. Aronia juice can still be considered healthy due to its nutritional values, provided you enjoy it pressed from fresh fruits in as unprocessed a form as possible. Because the berries are rich in secondary plant substances and contain vitamin C (13.7 mg per 100 g), folic acid (20 µg), zinc (0.15 mg) and iron (0.9 mg).
Since the berries of the rose family from North America contain small amounts of hydrocyanic acid, you should not overdo it with the dosage of aronia juice. Enjoyed in normal amounts, the drink is considered harmless in this respect. According to consumer advice centers, the tannins in aronia juice can cause side effects such as abdominal pain in sensitive people.
Purchasing and storage
The aronia or chokeberry is now mainly cultivated in Russia, Eastern Europe and also in Germany. Harvest time is in late summer. You can buy preserved juice all year round, often mixed with other fruit juices to make the drink taste sweeter. If you would like to make aronia juice yourself, for example from your own garden harvest or from fresh seasonal produce, this works best with a juicer or a fruit press. Around 75 percent of the juice can be obtained from the berries, which you should keep refrigerated and use up within a few days. You can also boil the berries in sugared water and then rub the mass through a cloth. This makes the juice – similar to the sour gooseberry – more enjoyable.

Because of its strong aroma, aronia juice, like cranberry juice, tastes very good with desserts. Simply refine yoghurt and quark dishes, ice cream and desserts with a dash of chokeberry juice. The tart aroma can also develop well in hearty dishes such as soups and sauces for roasts. Another area of use are teas, cocktails and shakes.
