Rice in a cooking bag: Cooking time is between 10 and 15 minutes
The rule of thumb for normal rice without a bag is: that double the volume of rice equals the amount of water. When the water is gone, the rice should be done. For bags, you proceed a little differently:
- Bring water to a boil in a saucepan and add a teaspoon of salt. Choose the amount of water so that the bag is completely covered later.
- For those in a hurry: Boil the water with the lid on or in a kettle and then put it on the stove, it’s quicker.
- When the water boils, put the bag in. Turn the heat down to low and simmer for between 10 and 15 minutes.
- Basmati rice takes more than 10 minutes, other types of rice tend to be ready after 15 minutes. In any case, follow the instructions on the packaging regarding the cooking time. The finished rice fills the bag completely.
- While most pouches contain 125 grams of rice, there are other sizes available or you may want to cook multiple pouches. However, the amount of rice does not affect the cooking time significantly: it is important that the rice simmers steadily for the specified time.
- If you prepare rice bags in the microwave, the cooking time is also between 10 and 15 minutes. Choose a level between 600 and 900 watts.
- After the time has elapsed, carefully remove the rice with a fork. Caution hot! Drain the bags and open them at the corner provided. Your rice is now ready to serve!
