New parents are often unsure about the first full diaper. No wonder: correct diapering needs to be learned. Is the selected diaper size actually correct and do female and male babies have to be cared for differently? We clarify the five most important questions.
When does a diaper need to be changed?
To prevent skin irritation from urine or bowel movements, check your baby’s diaper every two to three hours. And since newborns like to fill their nappies while they are breastfeeding or eating: always check afterwards whether you should change your baby’s nappies.
Also pay attention to the signs of a sore bottom or diaper rash and take appropriate countermeasures at an early stage. During the night, ideally only wrap before going to bed and immediately after waking up, not in between. So your baby’s sleep remains undisturbed.
Which diaper size is right?
For many mums-to-be, pregnancy is already a time full of uncertainties, with the birth of the baby there are many more – but don’t worry, with a little practice, choosing the diapers is no longer a problem. And just as little winding.
Unfortunately, diaper sizes differ from manufacturer to manufacturer. While the smallest product is usually the right one shortly after birth, the purchase becomes more complicated with increasing age.
The following therefore applies here: Make sure you are seated correctly! The ideal diaper should fit snugly when closed, but not constrict the stomach or legs. In the best case, one or two fingers always fit between the closed diaper and your baby’s skin.
How does the diapering work as stress-free as possible?
Your child is whining and fidgeting on the changing table and you are already dreaming of the day when it will finally be diaper-free? Do not see this procedure as just functional in the future, but as a way of bonding, similar to a baby massage. This way, diaper changing is less stressful. So, meanwhile, sing to your sweetheart, talk to them and stay relaxed. Your calm is transferred to the offspring. And if your baby doesn’t want to lie down while changing? Distract him by putting an interesting object in his hand, for example.
Are there differences in diaper changing for girls and boys?
Yes, there are differences here. It is therefore advisable to cover the genitals with a cloth when changing diapers in boys. In this way, you avoid accidentally being “pissed at” by the offspring. The same applies to girls: Always clean the diaper area from front to back and never the other way around. This prevents intestinal bacteria from getting into the sensitive genital area.
What do I really need to diaper properly?
In order to diaper properly, you don’t need much besides diapers. This includes A fixed changing area, for example, a changing table with a comfortable, washable pad. Along with a damp washcloth, baby oil is sufficient for cleaning stubborn dirt. If you want, you can attach a heat lamp for a comfortable climate. You simply dispose of the diapers in practical diaper bags.
