Regular pruning of the goji berry is important

Goji berries are the fruits of the “common wolfberry” and are also known as buckthorn berries in this country. In addition to being used as an ornamental plant, berries, which are rich in vitamin C, amino acids, and other nutrients, are also used in the kitchen. The plant likes to spread, but you can shape it into a beautiful bush if you cut the goji berries properly.

  • The best season for a cut in autumn. If you have missed the period, you can also prune the plant in spring.
  • Freshly planted, shorten the plant to about 20 centimeters in height in the first year.
  • In the following year, leave up to 6 shoots of a maximum of 60 centimeters.
  • From the third year, you can start pruning the goji berries only every other year. However, you should keep an eye out for excessively long branches every year and cut them off.
  • If you grow the goji berries into a shrub, this will also benefit the plant. The mildew infestation is reduced because more air gets to the bush and shorter branches usually bear more fruit than longer ones.
  • In the fifth year, it is recommended that you cut off the old main shoots and allow up to two new shoots to grow.
  • Tip: You can use a cut wolfberry branch as a new seedling.
