Decorate Bread: The Best Tips and Ideas

Decorate your bread with these tools

If bread is nicely arranged, you get even more desire for a slice. You can conjure up an individual work of art from a simple bread recipe. We will now show you what you need to do this.

  • You can give the bread decorations in the form of patterns. You will ideally need a sharp small knife or a scalpel for this.
  • Sprinkle the finished bread dough that has not yet been in the oven with a little flour. Then rub lightly to remove excess flour. Then start cutting your pattern into the dough using any of the tools above.
  • Be careful not to cut too deeply into the bread – otherwise, it could tear during the baking process. Let your imagination run wild and take your time for the fine work.
  • After each cut, clean the tool with a cloth or in a glass of water. It works better when there are no bits of dough sticking to it.
  • When you’re done with your embellishments, pop the bread into the oven. If you want it to get a nice golden crust, you can brush it with some egg yolk that you have diluted with a little milk.
  • But you can also decorate your bread with other, more unusual, tools. You can read more about this in the next chapter.

Little tricks for special bread

With a string, you can draw fine straight lines through the homemade bread. In this way, you create a kind of template that you can use to make precise cuts with the knife.

  • If you want to bake a ring-shaped bread, pull the dough apart slightly and place a bowl in the middle. This is to keep the shape of the bread. Then use scissors to cut into the side of the bread.
  • You can use the top of a glass as a template for circles.
  • A pizza cutter is also a popular tool for decorating bread.
  • Place two forks back to back and secure the heads with a rubber band. You can now squeeze the two lower ends together, like a pair of pliers. With this, you can “pinch” the dough and give the bread a special surface.
  • You can also use a sieve to give your bread a special shape. Make sure that your bread is round so that the ladle can be put on well and a spiral pattern can be seen.
  • You can also simply use standard scissors and make small cuts in the dough along a line. This will later create a jagged pattern on your bread.
