Doner – that’s where the popular fast food comes from
Doner kebab is considered one of the healthiest fast foods, so it is also very popular. You can find out here whether the flatbread pocket with meat, salad, and sauce also originated in Germany:
- Doner is a Turkish national dish originally from Istanbul. It was officially sold there for the first time in the 1940s – at that time, however, only to people from the higher social class. The lower classes could not afford the dish.
- If you want to look at the exact origins, you should include the period 1830-1840. At that time, grilled meat from a skewer was already being served in flatbread in Turkey.
- Lamb and mutton were mainly used for the original doner kebab. The meat was seasoned with marinade and then layered on a skewer. Then it was placed in front of a heat source and the meat was cooked while rotating. The meaning of doner kebab is translated into German: “rotating grilled meat”.
- The flatbread bag spread more and more in the 1970s. Berlin is considered one of the first cities to offer the doner kebab. However, it took some time before this was offered not only in the cities but also in the rural areas – from around 1990 it was there too. The meats used today are predominantly veal, beef, turkey, and chicken.
- In addition to Germany and Turkey, the doner kebab is still widespread in France, Spain, and Great Britain.
- You can also find the kebab in many other European countries, especially in the big cities. The spread began around the same time as the turn of the millennium.
