Can you eat bamboo?
- Bamboo is not only used as a building material, but also as food. The best known are the bamboo shoots, which can now be found in almost every supermarket.
- However, not all parts of the bamboo and only a certain selection of bamboo species are edible. Bamboo must be cooked before eating, as this is the only way to neutralize the bitter and, above all, the toxins.
Eating bamboo: These options are available
- The bamboo shoots are thin but wide pieces. Bamboo is mainly grown in Asia and is therefore mostly used in Asian cuisine.
- Also very popular are the saplings, which are very long and rather thin. The seeds of bamboo, the so-called bamboo rice, are less common in this country.
