Let’s get straight to the heart of the matter: Love avocados? You’ve probably already wondered what to do with the pit of the avocado. Is the avocado seed edible? Why does the rumor persist that an avocado seed is poisonous? We’ll tell you how to eat and use the avocado seed!
Center of Energy
The core of the avocado is a powerhouse. Everything that the avocado contains in terms of healthy ingredients is concentrated in the core. But the bitter substances and minerals that are less edible to humans are also found in a highly concentrated form in the avocado stone. Logical, because it contains everything you need to grow new avocados: You can simply plant it back in a flower pot and grow your own power food!
Grate and enjoy
If you think you can nibble the kernel like a nut, you’re wrong. Eating an avocado seed raw and raw is no fun – in terms of taste, it’s boring at best. To make the avocado seed edible, you can follow these instructions:
- Remove the brown skin with a small knife. If the shell doesn’t come off right away, soak the core in water for a while.
- Take a grater or an electric chopper and chop the core into pieces as fine as possible.
- Allow the pieces to air dry for 2-3 days if you have the time. Alternatively, you can dry them in the oven or roast them in a pan.
- You can now use the avocado rasp in many different ways: as a topping on salads, such as our fruity fennel-orange salad, as an infusion for tea, or simply as an ingredient in your favorite bowl.
Of course, you can also dry the whole core and grind it into powder, for example. Dose powder or grater very carefully and sparingly – when dried, the bitter substances come into their own and can easily spoil your enjoyment.
Toxic – or edible?
Is the avocado seed poisonous? Depending on the degree of ripeness, it sometimes tastes so bitter that it seems inedible. The core is therefore not poisonous! In fact, there are no long-term studies that report anything about positive or negative effects. The bitter substances have positive effects on the liver and bile tract, but too much of it will irritate the metabolism. If you want to eat the avocado seed, then do it as you would with any other superfood: keep it in moderation and watch your body closely.
