How to eat a rambutan
The rambutan is an exotic fruit that immediately catches the eye with its red, hairy skin, originally from Southeast Asia. But more and more often it also finds its way into our local supermarkets. But if you want to taste the fruit, you must first know how to eat it.
- Take a ripe rambutan. You can recognize them by their dark red color with their dark or green bristles at the tips. If the rambutan is still completely green, it is not yet ripe.
- To get to the pulp, you must first remove the peel. Place the rambutan on a flat surface and carefully cut the skin across the middle.
- Cut as if you’re going to cut the fruit in half, but don’t cut too deeply or you’ll damage the flesh
- Now you can pull the peel apart and remove it by gently squeezing out the flesh.
- If you don’t have a knife handy, you can use your fingernails to poke the rambutan along the seam in the shell. You can then pull open the skin along the crack and push out the fruit.
To remove the core of the rambutan
Once you have uncovered the pulp, you should now note that there is a core inside that is not eaten raw.
- You can now put the whole fruit in your mouth, nibble off the pulp little by little, and then spit out the stone.
- The core is covered by a solid shell. When eating, you should make sure that you nibble off the pulp carefully and do not eat this peel.
- Alternatively, you can also cut into the pulp and separate it from the core. With some varieties this is very easy, with others the seeds are more firmly attached to the pulp.
- Enjoy the firm, sometimes slightly dry flesh that tastes sweet and slightly sour.
