You can not only steam or boil spinach, you can also eat it raw. Raw spinach is very easy to use in salads. However, you should take a few things into account. Because not every variety is suitable for eating raw.
It is best to eat young spinach raw
A wide variety of dishes can be conjured up from spinach. The leafy greens are not only particularly tasty but also very healthy. Basically, you can eat spinach leaves raw. Young spinach leaves are best suited for this.
- Spinach is called differently. Leaf spinach is young spinach that has not yet fully grown. Therefore it has a mild taste. Young spinach leaves can be found in shops and at the market from March to May.
- Winter and root spinach, on the other hand, are spinach varieties that are already fully grown and have a strong flavor. These varieties are suitable for steaming and cooking.
- Spinach is non-toxic and can be eaten raw. Because of the numerous nitrates that are generally found in vegetables, you should only consume small amounts. The stalks in particular contain a lot of nitrates, it is better to remove them.
- Before preparing young spinach leaves, be sure to remove the stalks and discard bad leaves.
- Wash the spinach thoroughly if you want to eat it raw. Then dab the leaves well with a cloth.
- Leaf spinach can be processed well as a simple salad. For example, you can add the leaves to the salad instead of ordinary lettuce leaves.
Spinach Mushroom Salad
For a spinach and mushroom salad, you need 150 grams of fresh spinach leaves, 40 grams of mushrooms, 150 g of ham, and a hard-boiled egg. For the dressing, take 50 grams of feta cheese, a tablespoon of cream, half a teaspoon each of mustard and dried thyme, and three tablespoons of olive oil.
- First, prepare the spinach leaves by removing the stalks and washing the leaves thoroughly.
- Now cut the ham into strips and fry them. Dice the previously hard-boiled egg.
- Then slice the mushrooms.
- Put everything in a bowl and prepare the dressing.
- To do this, mix all the ingredients for the dressing and season with salt and pepper.
- Add the dressing to the salad and mix everything together.
