Fondant Vegan: That’s Why You Should Pay Attention to The Color Choice

Neither vegan nor vegetarian: You should avoid this fondant

To answer the question of whether fondant is vegan or not, you should know the following:

  • Fondant is made from sugar and water. Accordingly, the mass is usually completely harmless for a vegan and also for a vegetarian diet.
  • However, be careful with certain food colors. Because red fondant is often colored with carmine.
  • The dye is obtained from scale insects such as the cochineal scale insect, which means that red fondant is often neither vegan nor vegetarian.
  • Other colors that are based on red color can therefore also contain carmine.
  • So, as a vegan or vegetarian, pay attention to the coloring agent, which is sometimes only given as E120.

Watch out for gelatin

For vegans and vegetarians gelatine, which is often used when baking creams & Co., is of course taboo. Does that also play a role with fondant?

  • Most fondants that you can buy are made without gelatin. However, as a vegan or vegetarian, you should take a look at the ingredient list to be on the safe side.
  • However, if you want to prepare fondant yourself, you will often find recipes with gelatine.
  • Here you can simply replace the gelatine with agartine or agar. One teaspoon of agar is equivalent to about 6 sheets of gelatin.
